The conversation:        Legend:  I'm BLUE, Verio is This Color

My opinion:   Verio went HYPERBOLIC after it had seen this blog.  At first, the snot-nosed, pimple-faced kids at Verio did not UNDERSTAND.

They knee-jerk-reacted with what had worked for Verio in the past -- get rid of pesky customers who disagree, or who complain!  Kill, censor their accounts and don't refund them for the unused portion of the money customers had pre-paid, in good faith.  Verio's  policy is to cloak a legitimate, helpful response, claming that the customer had violated the obscure and all-encompassing "Other-clause".

Very clever, Verio!  When a Customer's email is List-Blocked, because of another Verio-hosted spammer, probably, THIS is Verio's modus operandi:

  1. Try to make the pesky customers contact " other departments" within Verio.

  2. If A customer complains (or  publishes what happened), kill that customer's account, no warning!

  3. When asked, say that the reason for killing the account is the customer's  "Other Activities".

It took Verio 5 days to retaliate, after seeing my blog.
No doubt Verio had meetings to kick this thing around.
The censorship minded Verio upper management puppets decided
to kill my two-year paid-up account and send me this email:

Verio has several items in its policy to which its victims MUST adhere.

I violated a policy called  "Other Activities"

Thinking of using Verio as your ISP -- Internet Service Provider -- Host ?  My experience...  would YOU be satisfied ?

  There are NO exaggerations here.
     THIS is exactly what happened.

There were lots of emails to get my little problem fixed.
Then the real trouble started, after I complained here.

My first and only contact to Verio's Support department started like this:

 Dear Verio --

Here is a letter from my friend, Kevin -- this problem has been happening for some time now.  Will you please take a look and let me know?

The kid at Verio didn't understand or read completely, so I tell him more...

No, you misunderstand. I'm not complaining about the contents of the email...
there is no abuse. I'm complaining about
not receiving my email: […]
Please pay more attention when reading. I have had this problem before, my
email not going thru. I have several domains with you and am establishing a
new domain this weekend, but will not host with you. It's too difficult to log
onto my account and change things […]

And I let off a bit of steam, which had been building for years, over how difficult
it is to FIND and log on to Verio's user account to change things like default email
address, passwords, etc.

I had this block removed and this is the message I received:

Dear Michael
RE: "If you were sending an email to a site using this list, please try again

How would anyone know if they are sending an email to a site using this list ??
Don't you know... you are the VERIO expert, I'm only a user, for christ's sake.
And why can't YOU do this checking, to see if the problem is resolved, after
all, Michel, the ball is in your court, I'm the goddamn customer, I pay you so
you should do your job and determine if the problem needs further fixing.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm going to blog this kind of funny customer
resolution that you people have, this is the second time for this problem that
I'm sidetracked. Again, I request a refund for the time my email did not work,
I leave it up to you to determine what's fair -- I know it has been at least 3
months. I will cancel all my domains with Verio of no satisfactory resolution
comes of this.

Thank you for contacting Verio Web Hosting Support.

I have looked into the issue regarding:

*********************************
Checking your other domains for inclusion on blocked sender¡Çs lists.
**
*******************************

As for your second email, I have forwarded your case to our Abuse department
and it would be literally impossible for me to know every service on the Internet
that is using a blocked senders list. There are many of them. The sentence you
sent is from the blocked senders list not Verio.
I could not find your other domain names in our database. If you will let me
know what they are I will be more than happy to check them for you. I am sending
your request for a refund to our customer service department but no one will be
able to call you until Monday (7-11-2005).
I am not sure how your IP was placed on any of the blocked senders lists. It
could be someone spoofed your IP and that is what got you listed but since I
don¡Çt have access to that information I can not be sure. This sentence, "If you
don't want to get listed again, don't send Spam," is from the blocked list owner
and not from Verio so it is not a feature of your account.

If you have further questions concerning your account, please visit our support

Thank you Michael. RE: "If you don't want to get listed again, don't send Spam." I do not want this feature, it makes my email unreliable. I never had this feature when I signed up with Verio. Also, I never spam anyone, so it's a mystery to me how this happens. If it happens again, I will cancel all my Verio accounts and domains. For now, for as long as my email has not been working, I would like a refund. Please direct this request if this is not your department, and have someone call me also. Then please check all my domains with Verio for this blocked-list-problem. I’m serious, I’m going to cancel if I don’t hear from someone real soon, this is the third goddamn time I’ve asked to be called. Thank you for what you did, Michael. I will not use your "Contact Submission" form, it's too difficult to log onto my Verio account... it's different and HIDDEN each time I need to use it.

Thank you kindly in advance

Which part of the "Other Activities" am I deemed to have violated?

I know it’s not the 'unlawful' part, so you must think my web page was harmful to Verio's subscribers, operations, reputation, goodwill, or customer relations, yes?

[Here, BTW is Verio's policy page.]

I disagree, I think my web page would have made Verio a more responsive entity, actually IMPROVING its operations, reputation, goodwill, and customer relations, thus actually being helpful – not harmful to Verio's subscribers.

My intention was to be helpful, not hurtful. That's why I only stuck to the TRUTH in my blog. If something was not true you could have saind what it was and I would have corrected it.

Please explain the problem; do you want me to remove the web page entirely ?

In absence of an agreement, I will have to close down my other domains hosted by Verio.  If you decide to stonewall on this issue – please EXPLAIN the refund policy in that case, for the other domains.

If no advantageous resolution obtains, I must ask you to forward to me all un-read emails which are still stuck in N0WSCAPE.C0M; and please also send all my web material and transmit it to me as soon as possible.

Thank you kindly in advance for your earliest reply.

Hello,
Well, I did tell you to send the material to my regular mailing address, the one I gave you when I signed up, and that if you can't find it, you should use my address from the Domain Name Registrar, Network Solutions, or simply look in WHOIS. I told you those 2 things, yes!

Wait please...
...OK, *I* looked up the address for N0WSCAPE.C0M in WHOIS, it is:

["Howard"]
PO Box xxxx
yyyyyyy, ST zzz18

I really need these data now ASAP, to get the latest version up, so please mail it OVERNIGHT EXPRESS now, if you can see free to do that. As it is, I’m having one hell of a time with this, signing up with a new ISP, changing the Name Servers -- after having apparently and unintentionally violated your "OTHER" AUP rule. You do not warn your victims, er, customers, or talk them first –- you knee-jerk delete their accounts. Shoot first, ask questions later. It’s a good policy, I do the same thing on my “sucks & abuse” pages J

The good thing that came out of all this is that my new ISP is much more
friendly and responsive and cheaper and has more features and disk space and
bandwidth and tools and name recognition and no hostility; I can even easily
find the form to log into my account; so, as it turn out you will have done me
a favor, if I don't cunt the time and effort spent and the money lost from sales.

I just wish you had said something -- that you could not find my mailing
address in your very own Verio files; it would have saved me an additional 2 days of
lost revenue.

Hello,

Nowhere in any of your email responses do you state to send the CD to your
"regular mailing address".

Your initial request stated:

"If no advantageous resolution obtains, I must ask you to forward all un-read
emails which are still stuck in N0WSCAPE.C0M to me; and please also bundle in a
zip file all my web material and transmit it to me as soon as possible. Thank
you kindly in advance for your earliest reply."

Your request was to "transmit" it to you. To which I responded that we would
only send it to a mailing address and I requested such address from you. The
next response we received from you was the one today asking if we had already
sent it out. Without your providing us with an address we could not send it out.

We will be sending it standard postal mail, not overnight. It will go out on
Monday when our shipping department is in as they have left for the weekend.

     Correction:
On Wed, 13 Jul 2005 08:38:31 -0700 (PDT) I ax you at abuse@verio-hosting.com
to please send a CD to my regular mailing address which Verio has on file. This
is true as you will see if you’ll just pull up my email. It’s reproduced, here
for your convenience, from my “sent box”: ---snip--- ...”Send the CD to the
address you have on file for me, for my domain; it's the same as the address
from WHOIS. Thank you kindly in advance. I hope you will not attempt to bill
me for this, as [that] would be adding insult to injury. And don't forget the
email files”...

I cunt understand how you could get this so wrong.

     My suspicion:
And now that I know you disregard some of my emails, perhaps you did not
comprehend or read my other emailed remarks / question from before. I had
asked: ---snip--- “Which [sub-]part of the "Other Activities" [of AUP] am I
deemed to have violated? I know it’s not the 'unlawful' [sub-]part, so you
must
think my web page was harmful to Verio's subscribers, operations, reputation,
goodwill, or customer. I tried to help you, for christ’s sake! The people at
my work all laughed when I told them that Verio had said that I had violated
Verio’s "Other Activities" policy –hahaha -- and they laughed for obvious
reasons, as I think even someone with the experience of your young years can
see. How could I have harmed to Verio's subscribers, operations, reputation,
goodwill? Where is your goodwill when you willy-nilly cancel a longstanding
customer without so much as a question, challenge or even an advance curtsey
notice?? Where is your goodwill when you have an abuse department instead of
an  anti-abuse department? I know you are the abuse department and I know how it
feels to be its victim.

Next time please be accurate, less disingenuous in your claim as to who emailed
whom or what. I’m beginning to think you may only be snot-nosed pimple faced
abuse department college dropouts who are out to alienate good-paying,
long-standing customer-victims, like me, for nothing better to do. A
normal-minded customer relations person would not have treated me like you did.
I never told any lies about you; you censored the truth by knee-jerk killing my
account. You are just making things worse for yourselves by putting my CD on a
slow boat to China, and by feigning that you have lost my mailing address and
by acting as if the ISP Verio is unable to append attachments with an email.

These people didn't offer to send me my email and my web pages -- files (which badly I need now) because of their rash act.  I'm in the position now (7-15-2005) to have to EXTRACT these files from them by asking Verio repeatedly for them.  The Abuse Team  said it will send them, by snail-mail [sic! ].   I will loose money each day that nowscape.com is down.  This is an awful long email-conversation for something as simple, initially, to get my email fixed.  What's next ?

It's only an opinion... but I think Verio sucks bad.

I decided to use YAHOO! to host my domain, nowscape.com.

This hasn't been a picnic either.  Unfortunately.  I had hoped to gloat, to Verio, about how superior Yahoo is.  After some days, I called Yahoo (you try finding the number, it's next to impossible Yahoo Tech support: 1-866-800-8092)  to find out why my new domain, for which I had paid them to host it, isn't showing up in browsers all over the world (I know this is so, because my browser can't see it either;.   Yahoo told me to call Network Solutions.  I did. OK but now,  Yahoo's FTP still does not work!... It only works sporadically, but most of the time it's not uploading my files at all or it won't even let me even log on!

Such is the state of affairs today, Saturday July 16. 2005.

Future Generations:  Have a good laugh, why don't you? :)

CC: I sent a copy of  this to Yahoo.  What a bunch of crap this Internet business is, even now, Summer 2005.

There were some hiccups and Yahoo's technical support was able to help me to get my FTP process going.  One unpleasant surprise was that I had to rename all my files whose name contains a space, and all the HTML which references those files.  Yahoo's FTP process will not upload them, giving the cryptic message "socket closed".

The good news is that Yahoo's control panel is easy to access, full of features, clean and easy to understand -- not like some ISPs'.  The email is web-based and it has a super spam-protection facility.

I emailed Yahoo technical support with a question about FTP.  The response was courteous and accurate.  Yahoo's response was not like this (some people we know):  "Unfortunately, we do not handle your accounts, nor your mail.
You'll need to email support@verio-hosting.com or call them at 800-551-1630 options 4, 1, and 1.

Thank you, Verio Abuse Team.
It arrived, finally!!
[12-3-2005]  Here it is... back to you.

This was only a test.

Thank you for the notice Patrik. Don't fool yourself or put words in my mouth. My request was email, and failing that, overnight delivery -- not UPS -- I've been without this materials since you willy-nilly canceled my account, without warning, just to be mean. My request is also that I receive a REFUND for other unused portion of my account term, for which you are providing no service, and only stealing my money. I
have updated my web page, FYI.

Don't address me by my first name, please. To you I am "Mr."  Be polite.

Don't forget to include my email, and don't snoop, don't read it. And tell me how to open it.

Thank you kindly in advance and next time please be more accurate in your accusations. It's not over until it's over, bub. I *will* get my money back even if you do stonewall. You are only making it worse for you.
